Forum d’Avignon Bilbao: “The city as cultural ecosystem”

  • 2For the first time, The Forum d’Avignon has been held in Bilbao from March 5th to 8th whith local, national and international culture professionals  to analyse aspects of ‘The city as a cultural ecosystem’.

    The Forum d’Avignon Bilbao kicked off with the first discussion: ‘A dialogue between the private and public sectors in the creative industries’, moderated by Jose Luis Rebordinos, Director of the San Sebastián Film Festival, and featuring a lecture by Jean Blaise, Director of the programme Le voyage à Nantes: culture et tourisme. The panel also included Katrín Jakobsdóttir, former Minister of Education, Science and Culture of Iceland; Maria Mur Dean, Director of the Bilbao-based art production company consonni; Gail Lord, Co-President of Lord Cultural Resources, Canada; and Joxean Muñoz, Vice Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports of the Basque Government.

    The second discussion, ‘Artists as a driving force in cultural and social change in cities’, was moderated by filmmaker and journalist David Trueba. The lecture by landscape architect and installation artist Vito Acconci was followed by speeches from Jochen Sandig, Artistic Director of Radialsystem, Berlin; Txomin Badiola, artist; Beatriz García, researcher in urban sociology with a focus on cultural policy at the University of Liverpool; and Christophe Cassan, Project Manager of Last Tour International, Bilbao.

    The third discussion, ‘The city as the driving force for cultural change in Europe’, was moderated by Javier Gomá, writer and Director of the Juan March Foundation. It included a lecture by historian José Enrique Ruiz-Domènec, professor at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. The other speakers were Guadalupe Echevarria, Cultural Director of Donostia 2016; Patricia Brown, Director of Central, London; Corinne Hermant-de Callataÿ, Policy Officer, Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy (European Commission); and Evelyne Lehalle, Director of Nouveau Tourisme Culturel, Nice.

    The closing discussion was ‘The city in progress, an ecosystem for the future’. Pablo Guimón, Editor-in-chief of El País (weekend edition), was the moderator. The discussion began with a lecture by the Dutch-American sociologist Saskia Sassen from Columbia University. She was followed by Tarek Cherkaoui, Chief Strategy Officer for the Qatar Museums Authority; Beatriz Colomina, architectural historian at Princeton University; Juan Diego, Secretary General of the Bilbao-Bizkaia Design & Creativity Council (BiDC); and artist Cristina Iglesias.
